Choosing The Right Network Marketing Company is part 1 of the 3-part post - How To Build 8-Figure Passive Income Network Marketing Business.
In this part, you'll learn how to choose the right network marketing company.
This part is written for rookies, newbies, new prospects, those who have quitted MLM business, those struggling to make impact in the network marketing business or MLM veterans looking to start a new challenge.
Learning how to choose the right network marketing company is vital.
Most people unfortunately don’t know how to find the right network marketing company.
They think they know, but they really don’t, and they pay the heavy price of failure.
If there are two steps to network marketing success, this would have to be # 1 on the list.
Finding a top network marketing company is important because if you’re in a network marketing program that causes you to have to constantly work at overcoming its deficiencies instead of just concentrating on attaining network marketing success, you're fighting a lost battle before you even begin.
Finding out whether your network marketing company can pass the "test" and warrant your consideration has to be a priority in your network marketing business plan.
Some of the most popular, or what appear to be the best network marketing companies, are not usually the wisest choice in most instances.
You need to be skeptical, analytical, and critical, and arrive at your decision based solely on the merits, not on your emotion, when it comes to choosing the right network marketing company for you.
You have to remember that this is a business, and if you don't treat it like a business you can end up as a failure.
By conducting a network marketing company review, getting answers to the questions below, and following the guidelines given, you’ll be better able to determine the right network marketing company for you, and be more likely to achieve long-term network marketing success.
No one in their right mind would want to pick a company that is likely to go out of business. Yet many people do.
And, even with what I’m about to share with you, there’s no guarantee that your network marketing company will last for life.
So…what exactly do you look for when picking the right network marketing company?
Enjoy reading . . . and at the end of this post, come back and comment the company you settled for and why.
#1 What Is The Long Term Viability Of The Company?
It is an unfortunate fact of network marketing industry that majority of the companies that enter the marketplace, go out of business in a relatively short period of time, leaving behind a bunch of disappointed distributors who have lost their business.
In case you were not aware of the statistics, here are the facts. Approximately 83.7% of ALL new network marketing companies are no longer in business after 2 years.
Approximately an additional 6% are gone after 3 years, and approximately an additional 9% are gone after 5 years. It’s frightening, but almost 90% of ALL new MLM companies are out of business after 3 years, and here's a real killer, LESS THAN 1% of ALL MLM Companies actually survive longer than 10 years.
Jon M. Taylor, PhD (PDF) conducted comprehensive research and analysis of the compensation plans of over 400 various MLM companies and presented his findings in his e-book, “The Case (For And) Against Multi-Level Marketing." His findings, which are posted on the FTC website, are pretty sobering.
After finishing all of his analysis and research on various MLM data, Jon Taylor concluded, “In every case, using the analytical framework described, the loss rate for all these MLMs ranged from 99.05% to 99.99%, with an average of 99.71% of participants losing money in an MLM.
If the purpose of building your Network Marketing business is to generate residual and passive income, (and that's TRUE, isn't it?) don’t you think it’s important that the company be around to pay you that passive income?
Statistically speaking, even with the best of intentions, honesty, integrity, and sizeable financial backing, like I've mentioned before, almost 90% of all new MLM companies will be out of business in less than three years.
Those are the odds, and even a gambler knows it’s financial suicide to bet against the house when the odds are that much in favor of the house.
If you're smart, you won’t bet against those odds either.
No MLM Company goes into business expecting to be gone in a few years, and most sound like good bets to be around a long time when they start out, so you can be easily captivated by their chances.
But once you take a look at the real life statistics stated above, you need to let reality prevail.
Don’t be hypnotized by the promise of potential riches from a “ground floor opportunity”. It’s usually just hype, the facts don’t lie.
You should also be aware that most “ground floor opportunities” are heavily promoted by “MLM Heavy-Hitters” in the Industry.
These are very successful people, sometimes MLM millionaires, who have a huge following and reputation, and are able to put together a large group of distributors in a short period of time.
They of course want the MLM company to survive, but if it doesn’t, they’ve already made a substantial profit for their efforts, whereas the “average” distributor is left with nothing.
Stay away from ALL “ground floor opportunities”, no matter how great they sound.
NEVER join an MLM Company that has been in business for LESS than 3 years with huge investment.
Let some other person take the risk that the Company will still be around a few years from now.
Does that mean that an MLM company that’s 3 years old can't fail? Of course not.
But it probably means they have a decent product at an acceptable price and that people are buying it, and that the company is being run fairly well.
They're not just saying it, they're proving it.
They've demonstrated they have some staying power just by the fact that they’re still around.
Before you spend time, effort, and money to promote an MLM business, you need to know the company is at least in the game.
Despite this advice, there are those reading these words who are confident their MLM start-up is different.
I hope you’re not one of them.
They may be right, but the chances of that are not very good.
My Verdict: Do yourself a favor and stay away from companies younger than 3 years especially if it comes from another country.
#2 Is The Company Well Capitalized?
This is #2 factor to test if your MLM company is the right network marketing company for huge investment.
If you take the prudent route and only join companies that have been around for at least three years, you still need to make sure, as best as you can, that the company has a good financial basis.
You can get a company’s financial information from a variety of sources.
The first place to get company’s financial capitalization information is from the company’s Web site, which you can find by searching for that company on search engine such as Google.
On my website, I am compiling a review of top network marketing companies in the world and I tried to provide information about capitalization where available.
The first and main thing to look at is the debt load of the company.
You would prefer a company with no debt, and a lot of companies promote the fact that they are debt-free, and that is good, but a little debt is OK, as long as it is less than 25% of the value of its assets.
The other important things to look at are, in order of importance.
- Does the company have a management team?
- Does the Company have a positive cash flow after expenses?
- Does the Company have sufficient cash reserves to handle growth?
- Does the Company own its own software system or contracts out that work?
- Does the company invest in infrastructure when they open new headquarters in other countries or they just rent office space?
- Does the Company own its own headquarter and office quarters or just rents their space?
- Does the Company have a live and efficient customer service and order department?
My Verdict: A study of a company financial status is essential for any serious investor wanting to value a company properly.
Join company with strong capital base.
#3 Is The Family Member Involved In The Business?
This is #3 factor to test if your company choice is the right network marketing company.
A family business is a commercial venture in which family members are involved.
A family business can include many possible combinations, such as parents and children, husbands and wives, multiple generations, and extended families taking the roles of board members, stockholders, advisers and employees.
Family-owned businesses are theoretically ideal because family members form a grounded and loyal foundation for the company and because family members will often exhibit more dedication to their common goals.
Having a certain level of intimacy among the owners of a business can help bring about familiarity with the company and having family members around provides a built-in support system that should ensure teamwork and solidarity.
Other benefits of a family business include long-term stability, trust, loyalty and shared values.
Families also tend to be more willing to make sacrifices for the sake of the business.
According to widely accepted statistics, 30% of family businesses make it to the second generation, 10-15% make it to the third and 3-5% make it to the fourth generation.
Statistics shows that network marketing companies that involve family members usually stand the test of time.
If the original company owners sell the business to other investors, it is very likely that the manner of operation will change.
Instead of a person whose heart and soul are in the business, and whose very existence is wrapped up in its success and reputation, you now have a person, or group of people, who will more likely be looking at the “bottom line” to determine how they can maximize their investment return.
It’s very common to have periodic changes in the compensation plan and changes in the product line when “investors” have taken over from an original owner, and these changes are usually for the worse.
My Verdict: Although it is not a major requirement, but if you are thinking passive income, you should choose a company that the owner involves the family in the board or executive team so that they can carry on the legacy of the owner.
#4 What Is The Owner History In MLM?
This is #4 factor to test if your company choice is the right network marketing company.
There are a small number of people, thankfully it’s not too many, that make a career of starting up Network Marketing Companies, making as much money as they can, then walking away when things get tough financially, only to start another MLM Company not too long after.
If the current owner of a company was involved with one previously failed company, I would have to find out about why it failed, and give it serious thought before joining his new company.
If they were involved in more than one failed company, I would not personally ever consider joining their current Multi-level marketing company.
In the end, it’s these people who make or break the opportunity.
The ONE thing that you have no control of is corporate decision making.
While we are in charge of our financial destiny, THEY are the ones who write the check.
So…you better do a damn good job of checking out WHO is running the company and what their background is.
There are people running companies today, as I write this, where the owners have been thrown in jail numerous times, have run company after company into the ground and have screwed people left and right.
Yet…they continue on.
Google them. Research them. Do a background check if you must.
And…let me say this.
Just because someone had a charging order against them or spent some time in jail, doesn’t mean they are a bad person or bad owner, it just means they may have made some mistakes in the past.
Have you ever made a mistake?
My Verdict: If you are thinking of building a passive income MLM business, never join a company whose owner was involved in more than one failed MLM Company.
#5 Does The MLM Compensation Plan Allow Sufficient Early Earnings
This is #5 factor to test if your company choice is the right network marketing company to help you recover your investment.
Because one of the main reasons so many distributors drop out of their Network Marketing program after just a few months is that they are not making much money and spending many times that amount.
It is very important that distributors you recruit have the opportunity to at least offset the cost of their product purchases with the commissions they earn within the first few months.
This can be accomplished if the compensation plan provides high enough commissions on the first few recruits your new distributor brings in, or on the first and second level of the compensation plan if your are using a Unilevel or Matrix plan.
According to an Inc.com article on direct sales, the median income for a direct seller is $200 a month or $2,400 a year—meaning other earners fall below or above that amount.
Without this availability, you’ll lose most of your recruits after just a few months, and be on a treadmill to nowhere.
My Verdicts: Don't join a company you cannot make immediate earnings to sustain you in business.
#6 Will The Compensation Plan Work For Your Specific Circumstances?
One of the most important yet least understood aspects of a network marketing opportunity is MLM compensation plans.
In fact, most of those involved in network marketing cannot provide an accurate description of how they are paid.
This lack of knowledge results in too many distributors getting involved with opportunities that are not right for them or realistic for their efforts.
The best comp plan in the business is the one that pays you.
There is no single greatest compensation plan in network marketing.
But one major factor to consider is if you will be working full-time or part-time.
You may also want to consider if you are good at sales if it’s a direct sales company.
Here are some of the common network marketing compensation plans.
- MLM Binary Plan
- Gift Plan/ Help Plan/ Donation Plan
- Matrix MLM Business Plan
- Uni-level Plan
- Board Plan
- Generation Plan
- Stair Step Breakaway Plan
- Australian Binary Plan
- Australian X-Up Binary Plan
- Monoline Compensation Plan
- Party Compensation Plan
Like I said, the best MLM comp plan is the one that pays you.
It doesn’t necessarily make a company bad or good because of the compensation plan they offer, it is simply a matter of personal choice and your circumstances.
Final Verdicts: I don’t ever pick a company solely on a compensation plan. In recent times though, more companies are finding ways to combine two or more of these com plans. These have resulted in more millionaire distributors.
#7 Does The Company Manufacture Their Own Products?
This is #7 factor to test if your MLM company choice is the right network marketing company to help you maximize your earning.
Because if the company contracts out their manufacturing to another company, that company also has to make a profit on the products.
That means, it is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to price the products competitively.
In today’s Internet world where information is so readily available, if your products are over-priced, compared to products of a similar type elsewhere, your chances for success are greatly diminished.
Having your products manufactured by another outside source instead of by the company itself, creates these other potential problems:
- It increases the likely hood that someone will get hold of the product formula and try to market a similar product.
- It takes the very important issue of product quality out of the hands of the Company, and puts it in the hands of someone with no vested interest in providing the best quality product, other than that of keeping one of its many customers happy.
- It creates a situation that puts the network marketing Company at the mercy of the manufacture when it comes to making sure that sufficient product supply is provided. If the manufacturer has a choice to make as to whether to provide a certain product order on time to your Company or to another of its customers, and chooses the other Company, that could have a very negative impact on your sales.
Final Verdicts: If you are thinking long time, you definitely want to join a company that manufacture its own products.
#8 Are The Company Products Unique With Retailing Value?
This is #8 factor to test if your potential company choice is the right network marketing company to help you retain your customers.
Because, especially in today’s information revolution with access to the Internet, if a product like yours is available somewhere else, it is likely that your prospect will be able to find it, and if the price is much lower, they’ll obtain it from that other source.
Many Network Marketers have been embarrassed when their recently signed-up distributor comes back from a trip to the health food store to inform them that they saw the same product their company has at the store for half the price.
It doesn’t matter that you think your product is better, because they perceive it to be the same product, just with a different name and a different manufacturer.
And to top it off, they found it at a much cheaper price.
Network marketing companies must strive for high-quality control standards.
Anything but the highest standards in products could break even the most successful network marketing company.
Final Verdicts: So stay away from Companies that offer common “me-too” products, unless those products can compete in quality and price with similar products from other sources.
#9 Is The MLM Company Products Trendy?
This is #9 factor to test if your potential company choice is the right network marketing company to help you remain in the game long term.
Not only do you require being in something that pulls on your personal heart strings form a product standpoint, but having something that is highly marketable in today’s current environment is also important.
Trying to sell LP records today, which are archaic and a thing of the past is obviously a lose-lose proposition.
- Is your product positioned in front of a trend or riding a current trend?
- Is the market size for your product or service significant?
- Do people already use or buy something similar?
- Is there already an existing need in the market?
Those are just some points to ponder in your search.
Riding the wave of growth of a burgeoning trend can certainly be advantageous.
You can’t build long term residual income (i.e., your retirement!) if the product or service only has short term appeal.
Think long term instead.
Final Verdicts: If you are thinking of building a network marketing passive income business, never join a company with products that is not trendy.
#10 Would You Or Others Buy The Products Without Income Opportunities
This is #10 factor to test if your potential company choice is the right network marketing company to help you remain in the game long term.
Because if the main or only reason that anyone would buy the products is to participate in the income opportunity, you’ll never have “retail” customers, which is dangerous to the long term existence of the MLM Company.
Also, any distributors you sign up that do not continue to pursue the income opportunity, will immediately stop buying any products and cut your own income tremendously.
It is very common for many Companies with good products, to have a sizable amount of some distributor’s income derived from the continued product purchases of inactive distributors.
If the products cannot “stand alone” as a viable product in the marketplace, without any promises about the ability to make an income from them, you’re headed down a dead end street.
There is mixed opinions on importance of products to network marketing success.
Final Verdict: If you can't buy the company products without the income opportunity, then don't join it.
#11 Is Their Compulsory Front End Loading?
This is #11 factor to test if your potential company choice is the right network marketing company to join.
Because being required to purchase an unreasonable amount of product upon joining a network marketing company, a practice that is called “front end loading”, is illegal in some states under their anti-pyramid laws, and is definitely unethical in every single instance.
This practice serves one purpose, and one purpose only, and that is to generate more commission for the people in the distributor’s up-line, at the expense of the distributor.
There are mixed opinion on the importance of front-end loading to network marketing success.
Final Verdicts: Stay away from any company that requires you to make a large product purchase upon joining, or from the person recruiting you who tries to persuade you to do it, even if it is not required. But there is an exception. If you are thinking long term such as starting a retailing or franchise MLM business, front-end loading is sure the best way to go.
#12 Does The Company Advocate Retailing Of Products?
This is #12 factor to test if your potential company choice is the right network marketing company to join for long-term success.
Many Network Marketing companies have been shut down by the State or Federal authorities for not having sufficient “retail” sales taking place.
I can’t emphasize enough how important this point is, so please don’t take it lightly.
If you work your rear end off and build up a good residual income, only to have your company shut down in the future because of this omission, you will have done all that work for nothing and have to start over again from scratch.
There is mixed reactions to the importance of retailing to network marketing success.
Final Verdicts: So, be very prudent when selecting a company, and make sure that the company not only advocates product sales to non-distributors, but also has a reasonable amount of such sales on their books.
#13 The Network Marketing Business Culture
This is #13 factor to test if your potential MLM company culture is the right network marketing company to identify with.
Company culture is the personality of a company.
It defines the environment in which people work – and spend time.
One thing I can tell you is that, every culture is different.
For example, most network marketing companies possess a team-based culture with participation on all levels, while other business models have a more traditional and formal management style.
Some cultures are purely product driven lovers and some are full of hard-driving marketers.
Demographically companies differ as well.
I’ve spoken for audiences that are all 50+ as well as groups of people who are all 25-35.
This again is simply a point to consider on your journey of finding the right opportunity for you.
Some companies have done an overwhelmingly amazing job of creating a driving culture of doers.
There’s magic in that.
However, there is mixed reaction about the significant of company culture to individual success in network marketing.
Final Verdicts: If being around producers that make big things happen is something that you desire, then considering the culture of your companies distributor force is something to look at.
#14 Does The Company Provide Marketing System & Tools For Promotion
This is #14 factor to test if your potential MLM company culture is the right network marketing company for ease of doing business.
When you are presenting your product or opportunity to your prospect, it’s great to be able to plug into a system that doesn’t require you to develop your own system.
In other words, having tools that do the information disseminating for you is certainly an advantage.
The reality is that most companies or distributor organizations within those companies have tools at your disposal.
If you end up in a deal and they are expecting you to just go out and “pitch” the program without any tools to help you, you’re likely going to struggle.
But again, most good companies have plenty of tools in their arsenal.
Some persons feel MLM companies should provide free tools and marketing resources while others feel individuals should design their own tools.
Final Verdicts: Make sure the company you are about to join have the right tools for you to get started.
#15 Does The Company Provide Platform For Doing Business Globally?
This is #15 factor to test if your potential MLM company culture is the right network marketing company for going global.
One of the best advice I got from my business mentor was to start small but think global.
Your network marketing company should have plan to go global and be moving in that direction.
Besides, the company should allow its distributors to key into their global business plan without expecting them to build a parallel global team.
The compensation plan should give you opportunity to recruit people into your team from any country the company operate in and get paid for your effort locally.
This will allow you to build a large organization of business partners that will continue to open new market for you to build a passive income network marketing business.
MLM companies have different marketing strategies, hence opinion differs on whether companies should provide a platform for going global or individuals should work it out.
Final Verdicts: If your plan is to build a large following of reps, you should consider joining a company that provide platform for doing business globally.
#16 Is The Mlm Company Agreement Flexible?
This is #16 factor to test if your potential MLM company culture is the right network marketing company to work with.
When you join a MLM Company as an independent distributor, you sign a legal, binding contract, which basically states that you agree to follow the rules outlined in the contract.
MLM Agreement or contract outlines the company’s policies and procedures and clearly states what you can and cannot do as a distributor.
These “contracts” vary significantly from company to company.
Some are just one or two pages long. Others are 50 to 100 pages long.
Most network marketing companies want to OWN and CONTROL their reps, and if you read their policies and procedures objectively, you would NEVER partner with them.
It’s sad, but true.
Other companies are more flexible and only have a few basic rules.
Unfortunately, most distributors do not read this document thoroughly before they sign it (if they even read it at all).
They’re so “hyped” up and excited about the business opportunity that they don’t do their due diligence first.
As a result, they might not have a clear understanding about what they can and can’t do.
Final Verdicts: You need to find out the company agreement policy on Internet Marketing, Participation in Other Programs, Money Back Policy, Compensation Plan, Systems and Training. After you read your MLM Agreement, you might even find that the company isn’t the right fit for you. Personally, I think it’s better to find this out before you join a company, rather than after the fact.
#17 Is The Timing And Marketability Right For You?
This is #17 factor to test if your potential MLM company culture is the right network marketing company for building mass following.
To really make it big in the network marketing industry, you need to join the right company at the right time according to Ray Higdon.
If you join a good company AFTER it has went through the momentum phase, you’ve really missed the boat.
You can still make it big with the company, but you won’t experience the same level of growth that the early birds got.
Some folks will tell you that the folks who got in early make the big bucks.
That is not totally true.
The people who got in early and worked their ASS off are normally the ones that made the big bucks.
If you get in early and don’t do anything, you won’t be successful.
Joining a network marketing company in the early years of the company does not mean anything other than your TIMING is perfect.
On the other hand, if you join a company AFTER the initial momentum, you won’t get anywhere near the rewards that you COULD have gotten, if you had gotten in early.
Does that make sense?
What I suggest is that you look for is a company that is at at least three years old and is starting to catch fire.
Or, look for an older, established company that is starting to get hot!
Look at the company objectively.
Evaluate how long it’s been around and what type of growth rate it’s had during the past years.
Look at all the top earners and find out how long they have been with the company.
If no one in the top ranks of the company has joined the company within the past five to ten years, you might have missed the boat.
Because this is a sensitive topic, there are mixed reactions on the importance of timing to network marketing success.
Final verdicts: If you think you’ve missed the boat, you might consider looking at other companies that are in their critical growth phase, or about to hit that phase.
#18 Is There Autoship, Monthly Target Or Renewal?
This is #18 factor to test if your potential MLM company is the right network marketing company for working part-time and to build passive income business.
This one is my personal opinion.
One common mistake by MLM Companies is forcing distributors to go on auto-ship, just to be eligible for their bonuses and commissions.
Personally, I don’t believe there should be any personal consumption requirements to earn a commission from your downline.
If you build a large team, you shouldn’t have any personal consumption requirements, just to get paid your commission check.
The same thing apply to meeting specific monthly target sales.
Also, there should be no renewal whether yearly or monthly.
Because this is a sensitive topic, there are varied opinions on whether MLM companies should require autoship, monthly target or yearly renewal?
My Verdicts: Beware of company that requires autoship, monthly sales target or yearly renewal because they might just be enslaving you.
How I Choose My MLM Company
When I wanted to make the switch to network marketing business, I decided to do a comprehensive research.
I took a long route by reviewing over 200 MLM companies.
I have been documenting the top network marketing companies MLM reviews.
But the research was easy for me because I used the 18 points above.
In addition, there were two other specific factors I was looking at.
First, I decided since the wellness sector is a $3.4 million market size sector, I will choose a company that feature wellness products.
Second, since I will be working this business part-time using the Business Quadrants Golden Rule of Wealth, I decided I will go for a company that the compensation plan will continue to pay me after some years if I decided to relax my effort.
Eventually, I narrowed down my list to four companies, visited their presentations offline and finally settled for one.
As a compensation plan and benefit specialist, it was easy for me to spot the little know clause that companies inserted in their com plans to limit your progress.
I am happy I took the long route and it works for me as my company has helped me to reach a milestone I never expected within the short time I joined.
For you though, you don't need to go through the long route, I have you covered.

Final Thoughts On Part One
If you follow the above guidelines when selecting a network marketing company, it will dramatically increase your chances of short-term and long-term success.
Some of you I know will look at all these criteria for selecting a good MLM company, and try to rationalize why some of them should be ignored when considering a potential company to join.
If you are tempted to ignore this company "test", you will significantly reduce your chances of network marketing business success, so I must warn you that there are certain rules that you should NEVER ignore, otherwise you are literally begging for failure to find you.
Here are the rules you should never ignore.
- NEVER join a Company that has been in business for less than 3 years especially if it's not from your country!
- NEVER join a Company that has debt of more than 25% of its assets or a negative cash flow!
- NEVER join a Company whose owners have 2 or more failed MLM companies in their past!
- NEVER join a Company that does not manufacture its own products or most of its core products!
- NEVER join a Company that does not have consumable products!
- NEVER join a Company whose products you wouldn’t purchase without an income opportunity!
- NEVER join a Company that requires unreasonable and/or compulsory “front-end” product purchases!
- NEVER join a Company that does not advocate and have product sales to non-distributors!
